Regenerative medicine is a new comprehensive approach to medicine that aims to complete healing of the injured or degenerated region by strengthening the natural recovery mechanism of the body and by using the cells of the body itself. Medications only improve symptoms without treating the cause of the problem, and so they must be continued for a prolonged period and are accompanied by the side effects that they cause. On the contrary, in Regenerative Medicine we seek the complete cure of the cause of the disease.

Regenerative Medicine is originally used by Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. It reappears in our time with the term Prolotherapy that is used during the 50s in the US for the effective treatment of musculoskeletal diseases. During the 90s, treatments with PRP and Stem Cells are made possible, hence, the list of treated diseases is getting widened. Promising enough, the combination of tissue engineering and molecular biology open new horizons in Regenerative Medicine creating opportunities for cure hitherto incurable diseases. Today’s technological advances provides us with sufficient representation of the human body such as musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging and enables us so to place the material exactly at the point of the lesion that we want to regenerate.

Some people name Regenerative Medicine as “the new surgery” because without even making an incision in the body and by just using a needle we are able to approach the site of injury and transfer the appropriate material thus initiating the process of regeneration in that area.
