At the ΑΑΟΜ conference

“Sports, Spine and Beyond Latest Advances in Regenerative Orthopaedic Medicine”

From 9 to 12 April, 2014 we participated in the proceedings of the 31st Annual Conference of AAOM“Sports, Spine and Beyond Latest Advances in Regenerative Orthopaedic Medicine” in Clearwarter, Florida. In addition, we have also attended the scientific seminar “Clinical Applications of Regenerative Medicine” that was offered as a pre-conference event.

The main conclusions of the conference are: the critical role of accurate diagnosis before any regenerative medicine treatment application, the efficiency and scientific foundation of Prolotherapy as a mature medical technique, the use of the ultrasound guidance to support treatments that greatly enhances their effect, and the efficiency of PRP and Stem Cells when applied correctly and supported by physicians that have already experience in Prolotherapy.

The main sessions of the conference were as follows:

Integrating Myofacial Anatomy, Diagnosis, and Treatment using Ultrasound Guided Regenerative Injection Therapy.

Prolotherapy was mentioned to be the base for any further development and application of the more advanced regenerative medicine treatments (i.e. PRP, Stem Cells), and the necessity for proper training for the physicians that use it was stressed. Followed an extensive analysis of Biotensegrity as a basic mechanical model throughout the human body and has been found to be a major contributing factor for the integration of anatomy, diagnosis and injection treatments.

Neural Disfunction from Sports Injury to the Battlefield – New Treatments, New Hope – Giving Doctors a New Set of Eyes

Taking advantage of the recent NASA International Space Station clinical trials, the attendees were exposed to the effects of low earth orbit to the eyes and brains of the astronauts. Moreover, an exceptional analysis of brain and spine anatomy was given as well as the diagnosis of lesions with the use of MRI. In addition, the latest results on Prolotherapy applied to patients with knee osteoarthritis and the results of the latest completed scientific research in the field were presented. Finally, followed an analysis for the role of hormones and diet to the healing process.

Interventional Cellular Medicine and PRP to Stem Cells in Sports Medicine

A method that utilized intra-discal PRP injections into the patient’s spine, a technique that needs further development, and the use of biological substances in degenerative discs were analyzed. Followed the presentation of a new treatment that uses PRP inhalation. In addition, a presentation of the use of Hydrodissection to the peripheral nerves under ultrasound guidance was given. The conference concluded with the analysis of PRP in tendinitis and the use of Stem Cells to athletes.
